Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete: What Is Still Requested Today (and What Almost Nobody Asks For)

Which golden age songs are still requested from mariachis in 2026, on which three specific occasions, and why you have to mention them when you book.

Of the whole repertoire of Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete, around a dozen songs are consistently requested from mariachis today, and almost always for three very specific occasions: mañanitas for an older person, September 15 and 16, and tributes or anniversary Masses. Outside those three contexts, this catalog is practically never requested. Knowing that saves you from asking for songs the group will have to improvise.

What is actually still requested?

The short, honest list, by artist and by occasion.

This catalog is almost the opposite of what a party needs when it has to get the dance floor going instead of paying a tribute; for that, the Los Ángeles Azules cumbia block that never fails at a party is what really works.

Why is it all concentrated in three occasions?

Because this repertoire stopped being courtship music and became ritual music. Hardly anyone uses Pedro Infante to win over a thirty-year-old anymore, but half the country still wakes up its moms and grandmothers with Las Mañanitas in his version, still asks for México Lindo y Querido in September and still brings Amorcito Corazón to the cemetery.

That has a practical consequence for the calendar and the price. On the latter, the Serenattia Index of live music prices in Mexico 2026 documents an increase of 30% to 100% over the base rate, with Mexico City reaching up to MX$10,000 per hour, Guadalajara MX$3,500 to MX$7,000, Monterrey MX$4,000 to MX$8,000 and Querétaro MX$4,000 to MX$7,500. And the main cause is not whim: it is scarcity of calendar. We break it down in how much a mariachi costs on September 15, 2026.

The fact that changes how you should hire

Here is what you only see from inside the market. Many young mariachis, with members under thirty, know by heart the five or six most-requested songs of this era and not much more. It is not a lack of craft: it is that the rest of the catalog is almost never requested, and nobody rehearses what they are not asked for. A group with older members usually has the complete repertoire because they played it when it was daily demand.

So if you want something beyond Las Mañanitas, Cien Años, Amorcito Corazón, México Lindo and Cielito Lindo, say so when you hire and not when they arrive. With two or three days' notice, most groups prepare it at no extra cost. Without notice, the honest answer will be that they do not have it. This same logic of asking beforehand applies to any infrequent repertoire, and we also explain it in how many songs a mariachi plays in an hour.

The key problem, which is more serious here than with other artists

Jorge Negrete had lyric singing training and a baritone voice with the projection of an opera stage. His recordings are in keys that most current mariachi singers cannot sustain without adjustment. A serious group lowers them, and that is fine, but it changes the character of the song: it loses the declamatory height that was precisely its trademark.

Pedro Infante is more accessible because his range was closer to that of a standard popular singer, and that is why his repertoire is better preserved. If your event revolves around a specific Negrete song, ask how they do it before booking. And if it is for mañanitas, the market standard is to charge per song or per short block, not for a full hour, something we document with real prices in mañanitas with mariachi in Mérida.

Where does this repertoire have no substitute?

In two places. The first is the cemetery: for a memorial anniversary or for November 2, Amorcito Corazón, Cien Años and Cucurrucucú Paloma are exactly what the family expects to hear and no modern song replaces them. The logistics and rates for that case are in mariachi for Day of the Dead at the cemetery.

The second is any event with a foreign audience. Cielito Lindo and México Lindo y Querido are the two Mexican songs that a visitor recognizes without exception, and they work as a closing at destination weddings, international corporate events and farewells. If your event has guests from out of town, save those two for the end and do not spend them at the beginning. For the complete patriotic block, the list is in the songs for September 15.

Which format fits and how much does it cost?

Mariachi, no debate. This repertoire was born with mariachi and any other format only approximates it. The national normal-day range, according to the Serenattia Index, runs from MX$2,000 to MX$4,500 per hour for a mariachi of six to eight members, and MX$6,000 to MX$8,000 per hour for one of twelve. For Negrete's songs, with their brass arrangements and declamatory character, the large group is much more noticeable than in other repertoires.

For short mañanitas, several groups offer a rate per song or per block of three to five, which comes out quite a bit cheaper than hiring a full hour. And if your date is September 15 or 16, book weeks ahead: what runs out first is not the budget, it is availability.

If instead your event is a party and not a tribute, the format that usually fits best is banda; the banda songs that never fail at a party are ordered precisely by moment of the night.

Frequently asked questions

Do all mariachis know this repertoire? The five or six hits, yes. The full catalog, not necessarily, especially in young groups. Let them know when you hire.

What is the most requested Mexican song in the country? Las Mañanitas, by far, and the reference version is still Pedro Infante's.

Does this repertoire work with a young audience? Only in short doses and in context. Two or three songs within a broader set work as a wink and usually go over well. Half an hour in a row empties the room if most people are under forty. The exception is September, when the patriotic context gets everyone singing regardless of age.

Is a large mariachi worth it for these songs? For Negrete's, yes, you can tell. His original arrangements carry a full brass section and the declamatory character of the voice needs a sound cushion that a group of six barely reaches. For Pedro Infante's repertoire, on the other hand, a mariachi of six to eight handles it with no loss, because his recordings were lighter in arrangement and more centered on the voice.

Hire the mariachi with the list in hand

With the golden age repertoire, the risk is not the price: it is showing up with a list the group has not rehearsed. On Serenattia you can search for mariachis in your city, see how many members each group has, compare real rates and send them your repertoire days ahead so they arrive prepared.
