At a typical seven-song serenata (serenade), the person hiring manages to name three or four and leaves the rest to the group's judgment. Almost always, at least one of those three is by Vicente Fernández. The problem is that his catalog mixes songs of reconciliation with songs of pride and of the cantina, and choosing badly completely changes the message that reaches the window. This list is ordered by what is actually requested, not by what is most listened to on streaming platforms.
Why is a serenade list not the same as a playlist?
A playlist is built for listening. A serenade is built to say something to a specific person, at a specific hour, with two or three neighbors listening without meaning to. That changes the whole criterion. A Vicente Fernández song that sounds spectacular in the car can be a disaster at eleven at night in front of a house, because the message is not love but spite, mockery or goodbye.
That is why it is wise to sort the repertoire into three drawers before choosing: songs of reconciliation (you ask forgiveness or ask to come back), songs of declaration (there is no conflict, you just want to say it) and party songs (to sing along in a crowd, for the finale, for when the family has already come out). In our guide to the 40 most requested serenade songs in Mexico you will see that the pattern repeats with every artist: people ask for the hit, not the right message.
The 10 most requested, by name
These are the ten that come up again and again when someone hires a mariachi or trio to deliver a serenade. The caution column is what an experienced group would tell you if you asked.
| Song | What moment it suits | Ideal format | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acá Entre Nos | Reconciliation, the most requested of all | Mariachi or trio | None. It is the safe bet of the night. |
| Por Tu Maldito Amor | Reproach with pain, a broken relationship | Mariachi | It is a reproach, not an apology. If you are going to say sorry, it is not this one. |
| Hermoso Cariño | Clean declaration, no conflict | Trio or mariachi | Rarely requested and one of the ones that lands best. A useful deep cut. |
| Un Millón de Primaveras | Reconciliation, a pleading tone | Mariachi | Demands a good singer. If the group does not have one, it shows. |
| Mujeres Divinas | Serenade for mom, a woman's birthday | Mariachi | Works better with a big group than alone in front of the window. |
| Lástima Que Seas Ajena | A complicated situation, unrequited love | Mariachi | It says what it says. Think twice about who else is listening. |
| Estos Celos | Reproach to a current partner | Mariachi | A heavy tone. Works only if the relationship can take the joke. |
| La Ley del Monte | Nostalgia, love of many years | Mariachi | Requested more at parties than at windows. |
| Volver, Volver | Closing, when everyone has come out | Mariachi | It is for singing along in a crowd. As an opener it does not work. |
| El Rey | Closing and absolute finale | Mariachi | It is not a love song. It is a song of pride. |
If your serenade needs a more intimate tone than a mariachi's, it is worth mixing in other repertoire. The boleros that never fail at a serenade work well as a trio block before or after the rancheras.
Which are requested so much that they have worn out?
Here is the fact you only see from inside the market. "El Rey" and "Volver, Volver" are, by a distance, the two most requested and the two that contribute least to the goal of a serenade. An average mariachi plays them several times a night in peak season. It is not that they are badly played: it is that they reach the window as background noise because everyone has heard them in the same context a thousand times.
If you want the serenade to feel thought out and not downloaded from the internet, use those two where they do work, which is at the end, when the person has come out and the parents have come out and there is a mood for singing along. As a first song they are a mistake, because they open with volume and pride instead of opening with a reason to look out. That detail of order matters more than it seems, and we develop it in the guide to how to organize a surprise serenade step by step.
Which ones almost always go wrong?
Three from the catalog are requested often and almost never should be taken to a window.
- Los Mandados. It is a comic song. Hilarious at a party, absurd at eleven at night in front of the house of someone you want to ask forgiveness from.
- Mátalas. Besides the tone not helping, it is one of the ones that has aged worst. At a romantic serenade it clashes hopelessly.
- Aunque Mal Paguen Ellas. It is requested because it sounds like elegant heartbreak, but it speaks to a group, not to one person. At an individual serenade it does not land.
The general rule: if the song addresses "women" in the abstract and not one person, it is no good for a serenade. It is good for a party.
That same rule, addressing a person and not an abstract concept, is what best separates José José's songs. The ones that do work at a window and the ones that almost always go wrong follow the same logic.
What about the key and the reduced format?
This is the point almost nobody explains before you hire. Vicente Fernández recorded in high keys and with arrangements written for a full mariachi, with two trumpets answering the voice. When you hire a mariachi of six to eight members, there is usually only one trumpet. Songs with a long, sustained vocal line, like Un Millón de Primaveras or Acá Entre Nos, hold up perfectly. Those that depend on the dialogue between the two trumpets, like El Rey in its album version, sound thinner than you expect.
With a romantic trio (trío romántico) the change is bigger. A trio of two guitars and a requinto does wonders with slow rancheras and with the bolero ranchero repertoire, but it cannot sustain the ones that live off the brass. If your list is full of rowdy rancheras, the trio is not the format, even if it is cheaper. And if you want to sing yourself, mention the key beforehand: dropping a half step or a whole step is normal and any serious group does it, but they need to know before arriving, not on the sidewalk. How many fit in the time you contracted is another topic, and we cover it in how many songs a mariachi plays in an hour.
Which format fits and how much does it cost?
For a repertoire dominated by Vicente Fernández, the natural format is mariachi. According to the 2026 Serenattia index of live music prices in Mexico, the national range for a mariachi of six to eight members runs from MX$2,000 to MX$4,500 per hour on a regular day, and a twelve-piece mariachi runs from MX$6,000 to MX$8,000 per hour. If your list leans on the slow rancheras and you want something more intimate and cheaper, a romantic trio charges MX$2,300 to MX$3,500 for a full serenade of around seven songs, which is exactly the size of this list.
Watch the dates. On May 10 (Mother's Day) the rate can triple the base and it is the number one peak of the year. On September 15 and 16 it rises 30% to 100% because of scarce calendar space, not only because of demand. February 14 is a short peak. Outside those dates, the price of the serenade depends mostly on the city and the travel, something we explain in depth in why two mariachis charge differently for the same event.
Frequently asked questions
How many Vicente Fernández songs fit in a serenade? In a standard seven-song serenade, the healthy balance is three or four by him and the rest spread among other artists. Seven in a row from the same performer flattens the night.
Can a six-piece mariachi play its whole repertoire? Yes, practically all of it. What changes is the weight of the brass in the rowdy rancheras, not the ability to play them.
Can I request a song the group does not carry? Yes, and you have to request it when hiring, not on arrival. With advance notice most prepare it. Without notice, you depend on luck.
Hire the mariachi with the list already built
The difference between a serenade that works and one that feels generic is almost never the price: it is having chosen the right songs and having said so beforehand. On Serenattia you can search for available mariachis and trios in your city, see profiles with their repertoire, compare real rates and send your list before closing. That way you arrive at the window with what you wanted to say, not with what they knew by heart.
