A norteño group is quoted within the national range of MX$1,500 to MX$3,500 per hour, and the norteño banda format starts from MX$3,500 per hour. Querétaro has no documented local normal-day range, so these figures are national, and it is better to say so than to make up a Querétaro number.

Of all the live music formats, norteño is the one with the best relationship between what it costs and what it solves, and in Querétaro that advantage shows more than in other cities for a very concrete reason: space.

The difference between norteño and norteño banda is not one of style, it is one of payroll: the second adds brass and tambora to the accordion and bajo sexto, so it means more musicians, more equipment and a higher price. If your party is at a house, the four- or five-piece format is almost always the right decision.

What does that price include and what is charged separately?

The contracted hour includes the musicians, their instruments and normally their own amplification equipment, which in this format is compact. What is charged separately: travel outside the urban area, overtime, a generator if the venue does not have stable power, and a stage when the site calls for it. Also ask how many breaks they take and how long, because three contracted hours with two twenty-minute breaks are not three hours of music, and it is the most frequent complaint we receive about any format. If your event is in San Juan del Río, Pedro Escobedo, Colón or the wine route area and the group comes from the capital, count travel as a separate line.

Why norteño fits Querétaro

Three things specific to this city explain why this format is hired so much here.

The first is industrial migration. The automotive and aerospace corridor of El Marqués, the Benito Juárez industrial zone and the area around the airport brought thousands of families from northern Mexico to Querétaro over the last decade. Those families celebrate with the music of their home: birthdays, baptisms, quinceañeras and farewell parties sound like accordion and bajo sexto in neighborhoods that did not hear it twenty years ago. It is a market that exists all year and does not depend on the wedding calendar or on tourism.

The second is urban space. Querétaro's Historic Center is a World Heritage site, with narrow streets, pedestrian walkways and noise limits in a good part of the first blocks. A full Sinaloan banda there is unworkable. A four-piece norteño fits in a three-by-three-meter area, sounds loud but manageable and does not force you to close the street. The same applies to houses in neighborhoods such as Álamos, Carretas, Cimatario or Milenio III, where the neighbor is ten meters away. Norteño is the format that fits where the banda does not.

The third is plant and crew celebrations. Companies in the industrial corridor hold end-of-shift get-togethers, department anniversaries and department posadas that do not have the budget of the corporate gala dinner but do want live music. A three-hour norteño solves that event for a fraction of what a versatile group costs, and it is what actually gets hired. If the event is more formal, the comparison of formats for companies is in music for corporate events.

When is it best to book in Querétaro?

The most expensive peak of the year in this city is September 15 and 16, when all formats go up between 30% and 100%: the only documented local figure for Querétaro corresponds to that date and is up to MX$7,500 per hour for a mariachi. For norteño on the night of the Grito, book in August. The second peak is December, because of company posadas and the state fair, which fill calendars from November. The third is the patron saint festivals of the municipalities, which have a fixed date and commit each community's groups months in advance. Outside those three moments, norteño is the format with the best availability in the city. For a normal Saturday, two weeks is usually enough; for a weekday party, a few days.

How do you choose without overpaying?

First, do not pay for members you do not need. Norteño banda sounds spectacular in a large garden and is wasted on a terrace; if your event is under 80 people, the four- or five-piece format is enough and saves you thousands of pesos per hour. Second, define the real block. Two well-placed hours, when people already want to dance, deliver more than four hours that start while they are still having dinner. Third, build the repertoire beforehand. A norteño group does not play the same repertoire as a mariachi or a versatile group, and if you expect cumbias and the group brings corridos, the party does not move. Ask for the list and adjust it. And fourth, ask for the price with and without travel. It is the line that varies most in this city because of the real distance between the capital and the municipalities where many of these parties take place. If you want to understand why two groups of the same format quote so differently, we explain it in why two groups charge different prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a norteño group charge per hour in Querétaro?

It is quoted within the national range of MX$1,500 to MX$3,500 per hour for a group of four or five members. Querétaro has no published local normal-day range, so we use the national one and say so.

What is the difference with norteño banda?

Norteño banda adds brass and tambora to the accordion and bajo sexto. It means more musicians and more equipment, and starts from MX$3,500 per hour (national range). It sounds better in a large garden, not on a terrace.

Does a norteño group fit in a house downtown?

Yes. A group of four needs about three by three meters and a stable power outlet. It is the reason norteño, and not a full banda, is hired in the Historic Center.

How many hours should I hire?

Two or three, placed when people already want to dance. After the third hour the party sustains itself with recorded music and the extra hour is expensive.

How far ahead do you book?

Two weeks for a normal Saturday. For September 15, book in August; for December, in October, because of company posadas and the state fair.
