To give a serenade (serenata) on Mother's Day, book ahead (it is one of the most requested dates), choose a format that fits your home, set the time and prepare mom's favorite songs. Las Mañanitas is the classic, but a bolero or a special song can also move her.

Why is the serenade the classic gift on May 10?

In Mexico, Mother's Day (Día de las Madres, May 10) has a very strong musical tradition. From early in the morning, many families organize the mañanitas, and live music is part of the ritual. A bouquet of flowers is lovely, but it runs out; a serenade is lived as a family, recorded on video and remembered every year. It is the gift that brings together children, grandchildren, siblings and neighbors in one scene.

Also, there are mothers who do not like receiving things, but do like sharing moments. A serenade responds to exactly that: it is not an object, it is a stretch of emotion that mom will not forget.

Which songs should you choose for mom?

The repertoire matters more than it seems. Some ideas for putting it together:

  • Las Mañanitas: the required start of any birthday and also of May 10.
  • Classic songs dedicated to mothers: there are several well-known ones that are requested every year.
  • Mom's personal favorite: the one she sang in the kitchen, the one that reminds her of her youth.
  • A song from her hometown or region: it usually moves her more than any commercial hit.
  • A bolero or a waltz: for someone who prefers something softer.

Ask your siblings or a close relative which songs she likes most. It is valuable information that is rarely talked about.

Mariachi, trio or something more intimate?

It depends on your home and the kind of mom she is. If there is a large family and a wide patio or street, the mariachi is the classic. If you prefer a calmer atmosphere, a trio or a guitarist with a voice works very well. And if mom has special tastes, such as norteño music or marimba, do not be afraid to choose something different: that is precisely what will make her feel seen.

If there are nearby neighbors

A serenade at dawn or mid-afternoon can surprise the neighbors. A kind notice the day before usually avoids problems.

If mom lives far away

You can hire a musician in her city and coordinate with someone in the family to be present. Afterward, watching the video together is part of the gift.

When to book and how much it costs

May 10 is one of the dates with the most demand of the year, so it pays to book ahead. The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking, so you will know soon whether your date has been secured.

Prices are visible and there is no exclusivity. The lowest published today by musicians (October 2026, MXN, before the fee) are: Mexico City from MX$1,500, Puebla from MX$1,300, Mérida from MX$1,700, Cancún from MX$1,800, Playa del Carmen from MX$2,000, Toluca from MX$2,200, Querétaro from MX$2,400, Monterrey from MX$2,500, Cuernavaca from MX$3,600 and Guadalajara from MX$4,000. For other cities and formats, see the price index. A good idea is to split the cost among the siblings: that way the gift is from everyone.

How to book without scares

Search the list of musicians, choose one from your city and book. You pay 100% when you book and the money is held in escrow. It is released to the musician at the event, when you scan their QR code before they play. If they do not arrive, the payment is not released, and that is exactly what you want to know on such an important date. In addition to the rate, a 10% service fee is paid with a minimum of MX$200; the musician receives 100% of their rate. If you need an invoice, the 16% VAT (IVA) goes on top.

Ideas to make mom feel even more special

Besides the music, there are small touches that make the moment even more memorable. Ask the children and grandchildren to write a short phrase of thanks and read it after the last song. Prepare a photo album that can be looked at while having breakfast. Invite a friend or sister of mom's she was not expecting, so the moment is even more emotional. And remember to record the full video: years later, it will be one of the memories they will most want to watch again.

If you are far from home

Even if you cannot be present, you can leave everything organized: hire the group in your mom's city, coordinate the time with a brother or a trusted neighbor and connect by video call to watch the serenade live. It does not replace the hug, but it does show her that you thought of her with time and affection.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book for May 10?

As early as possible, because it is one of the most requested dates. The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking.

What do I do if mom does not want us to spend money?

Many moms say that and then get emotional. You can choose a small format and split the cost among the children. What matters is the gesture, not the size.

Can I request specific songs?

Normally yes. Share them when you book and confirm with the musician that they play them.

And if the musician does not arrive?

The payment is held in escrow and is only released when you scan the musician's QR code before they play. If they do not arrive, it is not released.

Can the serenade be given at a restaurant?

It depends on the venue's rules. Ask the restaurant first whether it allows outside live music and tell the musician before booking.
