Giving mom a serenata (serenade) of Las Mañanitas on Mother's Day (May 10) means booking a group (mariachi, trio, banda or other) in advance, choosing the time and the address, and paying with the money held in escrow. It is a gift that is heard, recorded and remembered for a lifetime.

Why is Las Mañanitas a tradition on Mother's Day?

In Mexico, May 10 is one of the most heartfelt dates of the year, and music has always been part of the celebration. Las Mañanitas is the song used to congratulate a loved one at dawn, and singing it to mom with live musicians is a way of telling her that day is hers. It is not about spending a lot, but about dedicating a whole moment to her.

A serenade also has something other gifts do not: it involves the whole family. It is sung as a group, recorded, with a few tears. It is one of those moments mom tells the neighbors and her friends about afterward.

Which genre should you choose for mom?

  • Mariachi: the classic for Las Mañanitas. Ideal if mom loves traditional music and the family is gathered.
  • Romantic trio (trío romántico): for a calmer mom, with boleros and soft songs.
  • Banda: for livelier parties and families who enjoy dancing.
  • Norteño: for those who grew up with that music and feel it as their own.
  • Violin or saxophone: if you prefer something elegant and different, with familiar melodies.
  • Marimba or rondalla: special options for those who value the regional or the classic.

The golden rule is to think about her, not about yourself. What did she listen to in the kitchen when you were a child? That is a good clue. Check the options in your city at musicians.

Songs that cannot be missing

Besides Las Mañanitas, you can ask for a short, personal repertoire. Some ideas:

  • Las Mañanitas, to open.
  • A song dedicated to mothers that the family recognizes.
  • Mom's favorite song, the one she always plays at home.
  • A closer where everyone sings together.

Before booking, confirm with the musician that they have those songs in their repertoire. If there is one that is especially important, let them know in good time.

When should I book?

It is wise to book ahead so you have more time slot options. The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking, so you know whether your date and time are settled. We do not promise times or availability before that confirmation.

If May 10 does not work for you, no problem: many families celebrate on the nearest weekend, and a serenade on a Saturday or Sunday can be just as moving and more comfortable for everyone.

How much does a serenade for mom cost?

The price depends on the group, the genre, the city and the length you agree with the musician. The lowest price currently published by musicians on Serenattia (October 2026), before the service fee, is MX$1,500 in Mexico City, MX$1,300 in Puebla, MX$1,700 in Mérida, MX$1,800 in Cancún, MX$2,200 in Toluca, MX$2,500 in Monterrey and MX$4,000 in Guadalajara. It is the starting point, and larger groups may cost more. To compare, use the price index.

The musician receives 100% of their rate. The client pays a service fee of 10%, with a minimum of MX$200, separately. If you need an invoice, VAT (16%) goes on top. Example: a rate of MX$2,500 generates a fee of MX$250 and a total of MX$2,750.

How payment works and why it is safe

You pay 100% when booking and the money is held in escrow. On the day of the event, when the musician is with you, you scan their QR code before they play, and that releases the payment. If they do not arrive, you do not scan and the money is not released. It is important peace of mind on a date as sensitive as May 10, when the last thing you want is for mom to be left waiting.

There is no exclusivity: you can compare several musicians and choose the one that convinces you most.

Ideas to make it unforgettable

  • Ask a sibling or a friend to keep her busy so she arrives to a surprise.
  • Prepare flowers or a breakfast for after the serenade.
  • Gather the family at the door or in the patio to sing together.
  • Record the moment from two angles, hers and the musicians'.
  • Write a short dedication for the musician to mention at the start.

How to organize the morning of May 10

Las Mañanitas works best when the whole environment helps. A simple sequence for that morning:

  • The night before: review the booking and the address, and have the phone that will record ready.
  • Before the serenade: ask a relative to keep mom at home, in her robe and unhurried; the spontaneous reaction is part of the gift.
  • During the music: have the family sing along; there is no need to rehearse, everyone knows Las Mañanitas.
  • Afterward: breakfast or lunch as a family, with a simple touch such as flowers from the garden or a letter.

If mom lives in another city, leave a contact on site so the musician reaches the right address and there is a person to receive them, and coordinate the details with the Serenattia team when booking. If there are several sisters or brothers, split the cost and write a dedication together with one phrase from each. Mom will remember that shared message more than any wrapped gift.
