What to Give Mom Besides Flowers: A Serenade

Flowers are nice, but they last a few days. Gift ideas for Mom that stay in memory, with the serenade as the main option.

Besides flowers, you can give Mom a serenata (serenade): live music, with her favorite songs, at her home or at a place you choose. Other ideas are a family meal, a photo album or a letter. The serenade is the one that is remembered most, because it sounds in the moment and stays on video.

Why look for something more than flowers for Mom?

Flowers are a classic and there is nothing wrong with them. The problem is that almost all of us give the same thing on the same day, and a few days later the bouquet is already in the trash. If you want Mom to feel that you thought of her, it is worth adding or swapping the gift for something that does not look like everyone else's.

Think about what she enjoys: does she like singing in the kitchen? Is there a song she always plays when she is happy? Does it thrill her when the family gets together? A good gift starts from there, not from the catalog. And when you do not know what to choose, the rule is simple: give an experience, not an object.

That is why the serenade works so well. It is a gift to feel and not to put away in a drawer. It is also easy to order: today hiring live music is a lot like sending a bouquet, you choose, you pay and you wait for the surprise.

What gift ideas are there for Mom besides flowers?

Here are several options, from the simplest to the most special. Mix them if you like: a meal, a small gift and the music at the end.

  • A serenade: mariachi, trio, norteño or whatever genre she likes, playing her songs at her home or at a gathering.
  • A family meal or breakfast: reserve her favorite table or cook her favorite dish yourself.
  • A photo album or a video: with memories of you together, arranged by year.
  • A handwritten letter: short, sincere, with three things you thank her for.
  • An experience together: a spa, a class in something she is interested in, an outing.
  • A potted plant: if you want to stay with greenery but have it last longer than a bouquet.

Any of these options is fine. What changes is the effect: a letter is read, an album is leafed through and a serenade is lived with the whole family present.

Why is the serenade the most different option?

The serenade is a traditional Mexican gift, but few people think of it for their mother. We tend to associate it with romance, although in reality it is a way of saying "I love you" with music, and moms love it. There are several reasons it stands out against flowers:

  • It is a surprise you hear: she does not have to open or unwrap anything, it is enough for her to come to the door.
  • It brings the family together: siblings, grandchildren and aunts and uncles can sing along with her.
  • It adapts to her taste: if your mom likes boleros, you order a trio; if she likes ranchera, a norteño; if she wants the traditional, mariachi.
  • It can be recorded: the video stays forever and you can watch it every May 10 (Mother's Day) or on her birthday.
  • It does not compete with the flowers: you can bring the bouquet and the mariachi on the same day.

Which songs are requested most for a mom?

Every family has its own, but there is a very common repertoire: Las Mañanitas, Amor eterno, Mi viejo amor, Cielito lindo, Si nos dejan and some songs that speak directly about the mother. The best thing is to ask the group to play what she used to sing at home. If you are unsure, ask a sister or an uncle what her favorite song is, without her finding out.

How much does it cost to give a serenade and how do you hire one?

The price depends on the city, the type of group and how long they play. On Serenattia the price of each musician is visible before booking and there is no exclusivity: you compare and choose. These are the lowest prices published today (October 2026) in some markets, in Mexican pesos and before the service fee:

CityFrom
Mexico CityMX$1,500
PueblaMX$1,300
MéridaMX$1,700
CancúnMX$1,800
TolucaMX$2,200
QuerétaroMX$2,400
MonterreyMX$2,500

These are minimum prices, not a promise for any date: what appears on each musician's profile rules. You can review the references in the index of music prices in Mexico.

To hire, you go to /musicos, choose a city, genre and musician, and send your booking. The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking. You pay 100% when you book and the money is held in escrow. The musician's payment is released only on the day of the event, when you scan their QR code before they start playing. If they do not arrive, the payment is not released.

The musician receives 100% of their rate. You pay a service fee of 10% separately, with a minimum of MX$200. If you need an invoice, it can be issued and the VAT (16%) goes on top.

How do you organize the serenade so it is a surprise?

A good surprise is put together with a little order. These steps help:

  1. Choose the date: book early, especially for May 10. If it is for her birthday or any ordinary Sunday, it is easier.
  2. Pick the genre and the repertoire according to what she likes, not what you like.
  3. Coordinate with someone at home so she is present and does not go out right at that moment.
  4. Tell the neighbors if volume could be an issue, especially in buildings.
  5. Ask a relative to record the video from the beginning.
  6. Combine it with a small gift: the bouquet, the meal or the letter, so the day feels complete.

If you like, you can start the booking at the musician catalog and compare options by city. Once you have the date, the choice of genre is what most defines the atmosphere.
