What to Give for Every Occasion (and Why a Serenade Wins)

A quick guide to what to give depending on the occasion and the person, with an option almost no one considers: a serenade with live music.

What to give for every occasion depends on the person, the date, and what you want to tell them. For birthdays, anniversaries, apologies, or achievements there are classic gestures, but the option that is remembered most is a serenade (serenata): live music, with that person's songs, booked online with a visible price.

How do you pick a gift without getting it wrong?

Before looking at catalogs, answer three questions: who is it? what do they like? and what do you want them to feel when they receive it? Most gifts fail because they are chosen based on what's easy to get and not on the person. A good gift fulfills one of these functions: to surprise, to thank, to accompany, or to celebrate. When you are clear on the purpose, the list of options shrinks on its own.

It is also worth thinking about what can't be bought in a hurry: time, attention, and a shared moment. That is why gifts that involve an experience tend to stay in the memory longer than objects. And among experiences, few have as much effect as hearing live music dedicated to you.

What to give depending on the occasion?

This table summarizes common ideas and how each one is transformed with a serenade:

OccasionUsual giftOption with a serenade
BirthdayCake, bouquet, or clothesLas mañanitas with a mariachi or trio at party time
AnniversaryDinner, jewelry, flowersRomantic serenade with the couple's song
ApologizingFlowers, letter, chocolatesSerenade with a song that says what is hard to say
Mother's DayFlowers, a meal, appliancesMañanitas and boleros first thing in the morning
GraduationWatch, wallet, tripLive music at the family meal
Farewell or retirementPlaque, recognitionA song dedicated in front of the team
Get well soonFlowers, card, soupShort serenade with soft songs
Marriage proposalRing and dinnerSerenade for the moment of the question

It is not about replacing everything above. A cake with a serenade, a dinner with a serenade, or a bouquet with a serenade are combinations that work very well, because music gives character to any gesture you already had in mind.

Why is a serenade the gift almost no one considers?

People think a serenade is hard to organize, that it requires knowing a mariachi, or that it is only for romance. None of that is true today. On Serenattia you see the musicians, their published price, and their videos, choose the genre, and book online, like any other gift. And the music isn't just for couples: it works for mom, dad, grandparents, friends, coworkers, or whoever is having a birthday.

What makes it different is that it combines three things that rarely go together: surprise, shared time, and emotion. When someone gives you an object, you appreciate it. When someone brings music to your door, you feel it.

Which musical genre should you choose for each person?

  • Mariachi: for birthdays, mañanitas, anniversaries, and almost any family celebration.
  • Trio: for romantic songs and boleros, ideal for couples or an intimate moment.
  • Norteño: for someone who grew up with accordion and bajo sexto, or for a party with a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Banda: for big celebrations with lots of people and a desire to dance.
  • Saxophone, violin, marimba, or rondalla: for a different atmosphere, with style and lots of personality.

The golden rule: choose what the person listens to when they are happy, not what seems most showy to you.

How much does it cost and how is it paid?

Each musician publishes their rate and there is no exclusivity. The lowest price published today on Serenattia (October 2026, before the service fee) is from MX$1,500 in CDMX, MX$1,300 in Puebla, MX$1,700 in Mérida, MX$1,800 in Cancún, and MX$2,500 in Monterrey, among other markets. Check the music price index for Mexico to compare.

A 10% service fee, with a minimum of MX$200, is added to the rate and paid separately; the musician receives 100% of their rate. You pay 100% when booking and the money is held in escrow: it is released to the musician at the event, when you scan their QR code before they play. If they don't show up, the payment is not released. The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking, and if you need an invoice it can be issued with the 16% VAT on top.

How to book the serenade in three steps?

  • Choose: go to the list of musicians, filter by your city, and pick genre and price.
  • Tell us: give the date, time, address, the person's name, and the songs you want.
  • Pay: 100% when booking, with the money in escrow until you scan the musician's QR.

If you still have doubts, think about the last time someone truly surprised you. Chances are it wasn't because of the price of the gift, but because of the moment. A serenade is made for that.
