Types of serenade (serenata) are told apart by the group that plays them: mariachi, romantic trio, norteño, banda, rondalla, saxophone, violin or marimba. Each one creates a different atmosphere, just as each flower conveys something different. Choose according to the person, the place, the occasion and your budget, and book on Serenattia with the price in plain view.
When someone says "I want a serenade", they almost always picture a mariachi. And it is a great option. But there are more, and sometimes another is better for the moment. This guide helps you choose as if you were picking a bouquet: by the message you want to give.
What types of serenade exist?
Mariachi
The classic. Trumpets, violins, guitarrón and vihuela fill the air and announce a celebration. Ideal for birthdays, May 10 (Mother's Day, Día de las Madres), anniversaries and surprises with family. Its sound is powerful, so it shines best in patios, streets or open spaces.
Romantic trio
Two guitars and three harmonized voices, with a repertoire of boleros. It is intimate, elegant and works in small spaces, even in an apartment. The favorite option for couples, Valentine's Day and apologizing.
Norteño
Accordion, bajo sexto and polka and corrido rhythm. Cheerful and danceable. It goes very well at parties, Dad's birthday or outdoor gatherings.
Banda
Horns and percussion with a lot of force. For big celebrations and occasions where you want noise and dancing.
Rondalla
A string ensemble with a choir, with a nostalgic and sweet sound. Very traditional and special for grandmothers, grandfathers and serenades from another era.
Saxophone or violin
A soloist playing romantic melodies. Elegant, discreet, ideal for proposals, dinners and anniversaries.
Marimba
Warmth and a different flavor. Very pleasant at birthdays, family gatherings and special celebrations.
Which to choose depending on the person?
| If the person is... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Shy or reserved | Trio, violin or saxophone |
| Very sociable and festive | Mariachi, norteño or banda |
| Traditional or older | Rondalla, mariachi or trio |
| Romantic | Trio, violin or saxophone |
| With modern tastes | Saxophone, violin or versatile group |
Which to choose depending on the place and the budget?
Small groups fit anywhere; large ones need space. And as for budget, there is no rule, because each musician publishes their rate. As a reference, the lowest price published today on Serenattia (October 2026, before the service fee) is from MX$1,300 in Puebla, MX$1,500 in Mexico City, MX$1,700 in Mérida, MX$1,800 in Cancún, MX$2,000 in Playa del Carmen and MX$2,200 in Toluca. Not every type of group is published in every location; filter at /musicos. To compare prices, see the music price index for Mexico.
How do you book and how do you pay?
You choose the group, see the price and send your booking with the date, time and address. The Serenattia team confirms availability. You pay 100% when you book, plus a 10% service fee (minimum MX$200) that goes separately; the musician receives 100% of their rate. The money is held in escrow and is released when, at the event, you scan the musician's QR code before they play. If they do not arrive, the payment is not released. An invoice can be issued, with the 16% VAT (IVA) on top.
Tips for choosing without regrets
- Think of the person first, not your own taste.
- Ask the musician how many songs their rate includes.
- Say if the place is an apartment or a space with noise restrictions.
- Choose a central song that has meaning for the person.
Can you combine types?
Some musicians work by combining styles, and at large gatherings you can book more than one group. That is arranged at booking; ask whoever confirms. The usual approach is to choose one group and ask it to alternate cheerful and romantic songs.
Which songs usually play in each type of serenade
The repertoire also changes with the group. A mariachi usually opens with ranchero classics and closes with a song everyone sings together; it is the one that works best with Las Mañanitas. A trio moves between boleros and romantic ballads, with harmonies that shine in silence, which is why it is such a good option for an apology or a declaration. A norteño group brings polkas, corridos and cumbias for dancing. A banda fills the celebration with energy through songs everyone knows. The rondalla shines with old songs and choir pieces. The saxophone and the violin perform instrumental melodies of love, ideal when you want to speak little and move people a lot.
The best practice is to bring three songs decided: one to open, one for the person and one to say goodbye. If you are not sure, ask the musician what works best for your occasion; someone who plays every week knows what connects.
How long does a serenade normally last?
It depends on the published rate and what was agreed. Some hire a few songs for a brief moment and some prefer a longer serenade for a party. What matters is that the number of songs or the length is clear before paying. If something is not explicit on the profile, ask when you book to avoid misunderstandings on the day of the event.
