A serenade for your grandmother works best with songs from her era (boleros, rancheras and waltzes), a comfortable volume and the family gathered. Choose a trio or mariachi, let whoever cares for her know, and make sure she is comfortable and seated. What matters is not the size, but that she hears what brings back memories.
Many grandmothers have already been given flowers, chocolates and phone calls. A serenade is different: the music takes them to another era, to a dance, to a party with their partner. It is a gift that brings good tears and leaves a story for the whole family.
Which songs to choose for a serenade for Grandma?
The key is to choose the repertoire from when she was young, not today's. These songs are usually safe:
- Classic boleros: "Sabor a mí", "Bésame mucho", "Perfidia", "Sombras".
- Rancheras and Mexican songs: "Cielito lindo", "Las mañanitas", "Y volveré", "México lindo y querido".
- Love songs from her era: the ones that played on the radio when she was twenty.
- A song from her hometown or state: if she is from Jalisco, Veracruz or Yucatán, that moves her even more.
- A waltz or dance song: if she likes to dance, a gentle step with someone in the family is a beautiful moment.
If you are not sure, ask your aunts and uncles or cousins: almost always someone remembers which was "her song". It also works to ask the musician, who knows the repertoires that older people like most.
Mariachi, trio or something calmer?
- Trio: guitars and soft voices; ideal if loud noise bothers her.
- Mariachi: if it is a family party and she likes the classic atmosphere, it is perfect.
- Rondalla: student-ensemble choruses that remind her of her youth.
- Violin or saxophone: for an intimate gathering, with slow songs.
- Marimba: if in her region it is part of the celebrations.
Tell the musician it is for an older person, so they adjust volume and rhythm.
How do you look after her comfort during the serenade?
- Prepare a comfortable chair from which she can see them without getting tired.
- Avoid hours of strong heat, cold or humidity; preferably in the afternoon.
- Let whoever cares for her know, so she is not startled by the musicians' arrival.
- Consider the volume: in a closed space, a trio is better.
- Have water, a handkerchief and a moment afterward to chat and let her be moved.
If she lives in another city or in a nursing home, first ask whether live music is allowed and at what time.
A short list for a grandmother, step by step
If you do not know where to start, this structure of three or four songs usually works:
- A familiar one to break the ice: "Las mañanitas" if it is her birthday, or "Cielito lindo" if it is an ordinary visit.
- One from her story: her wedding song, the one from her hometown or the one she sang while cooking.
- One that moves: a soft bolero or a piece that speaks of family.
- One to sing together: cheerful, short and with known lyrics, so the grandchildren take part.
When is the best time to do it
- In the afternoon: it is usually a good time if Grandma rests better in the morning or prefers to avoid the night.
- After a family meal: everyone is already together and relaxed.
- On her special date: birthday, Mother's Day or wedding anniversary.
Ask whoever lives with her what her rhythm is and adapt the time to when she is most comfortable.
How to involve the whole family
- Ask each grandchild to prepare a phrase of thanks.
- Gather old photos and place them near where Grandma will sit.
- If there are relatives far away, organize a video call so they can watch during the serenade.
- At the end, take a photo of the whole family with her.
If the gift is from a distance, coordinate with the Serenattia team, when booking, how the musician's QR code scan will be done.
How do you book it without complications?
Go to /musicos, choose a group and compare rates, which are visible. If you will not be present, coordinate it with the Serenattia team when booking. If the musician does not show up, the payment is not released. There is no exclusivity and the team confirms the availability of each booking.
The service fee is 10% with a minimum of MX$200, paid separately; the musician receives 100% of their rate. An invoice can be issued with VAT (16%) on top. As a reference, today the lowest published price is from MX$1,500 in CDMX, from MX$1,300 in Puebla and from MX$1,700 in Mérida; check more in the price index.
How do you make it even more special?
Ask someone to record video, so those who could not attend can watch it. Invite children and grandchildren to sing. Ask the musician to mention her name in the dedication and to close with "Las mañanitas" if it coincides with her birthday. And if you want another gift idea for a special date, the serenade combines very well with a handwritten letter.
