A romantic trio costs MX$2,300 to MX$3,500 for a serenade of about seven songs. That is the national range from the Serenattia Index 2026, and we use it because Tijuana has no published local range. If you prefer to pay per piece, a single song runs MX$225 to MX$262.

The trio is the most intimate and the cheapest format of live music with vocals: requinto, guitar and three voices, boleros of all time. It's hired for serenades (serenatas), for mom's or grandma's birthday, for anniversaries and for the cocktail hour at a wedding. And in Tijuana it has a use that almost doesn't exist in other cities.

As in the rest of our guides for this city, we say it plainly: these are national ranges, not Tijuana's. The Serenattia Index documents local figures for Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Cancún; for Tijuana there is no published source and we are not going to invent one. If you want the breakdown of the format without any city filter, it's in how much a bolero trio costs in 2026.

What does that price include and what is charged separately?

A standard serenade includes the three musicians, their instruments, a block of about seven songs that you choose and travel within the city. What is usually charged separately is travel to distant neighborhoods or outside the urban area, additional songs beyond those contracted, the early-morning hours, which many groups quote with a surcharge, and amplification if the serenade is in a hall and not in the street. At a home the trio plays acoustic and doesn't need it.

Before closing, agree on three things in writing: the exact time, the address with visual landmarks and the song list. The third matters more than it seems, because a trio that improvises ends up playing the same five songs as always and the serenade loses exactly what makes it personal.

A serenade in Tijuana is organized around the border crossing

Here is the feature of this city that doesn't apply anywhere else. Tijuana lives off the busiest border crossing in the world, with more than 70,000 people a day passing through San Ysidro. That means that in a great many Tijuana families there are children, siblings or grandchildren living on the San Diego side who come for the weekend. The serenade, which in the rest of the country is organized for the night of the birthday whenever it falls, in Tijuana is fitted to the weekend when the person can cross. It's normal to hire a trio for a Friday night even though the birthday was on a Tuesday, and it's normal for the organizer to be on the other side and coordinate everything by phone.

Two concrete tips come out of this. The first: if you're coordinating from San Diego or Chula Vista, settle the price in pesos and in writing before the night, with the time and address confirmed, because the room to solve surprises from a distance is zero. The second: calculate the return wait time if you are also going to cross that early morning. A serenade that starts at one in the morning and lasts half an hour leaves you at the border gate at a difficult hour.

The city's geography also rules. Many Tijuana neighborhoods are on hillsides, with narrow, steep streets, sometimes unpaved in the upper parts, and scarce parking. The trio arrives in a vehicle with instruments: give clear landmarks, not just the address, and tell them if the last stretch is uphill or if it's better to leave the car below. In Playas de Tijuana and on the coast there is another factor, the wind and the nighttime cold from the Pacific, which in winter is real: a requinto and three voices outdoors at eleven at night in the wind are heard less than you imagine, so it's best to hold the serenade in the patio or sheltered on the side of the wall and not right on the sidewalk.

The other strong use of the trio in this city is at the table. Tijuana has the highest concentration of restaurants per inhabitant in the country, and in that scene the trio works per single song, MX$225 to MX$262 nationally, moving between tables in the dining areas of Zona Río and downtown. It's the cheapest way to have live music at an anniversary dinner: three or four songs at dessert time cost less than any other format and achieve the same effect. When is it best to book in Tijuana?

The trio has three dates when the calendar saturates and prices go to the top. May 10 is the number one peak of the year for this format across Mexico, with rates reaching up to triple the base: if you want a trio that day, close in April, not in May. On December 12, with the Guadalupe mañanitas, there is massive nationwide demand from the early morning. And February 14 is a short but intense peak, concentrated in a few hours of the night.

Outside those dates, the trio is among the formats with the best availability in the country: a week ahead is usually enough on weekdays, and two weeks for a Friday or Saturday. The only caveat in Tijuana is long weekends and holiday bridges, when the flow of relatives crossing spikes and serenades with it. How do you choose without overpaying?

Ask for a live audio, not a video with background music: in a trio what you buy is three voices in tune with one another, and that can be heard in three seconds. Define the number of songs from the start, because the charge per additional piece is where the bill shoots up. Confirm whether the price includes travel to your specific neighborhood and not just to the city. And if what you want is volume and presence for a party with many guests, the trio is not the format: there it's worth comparing with what a mariachi costs in Tijuana, which covers different ground. The trio is for the intimate, and there nobody beats it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MX$2,300 to MX$3,500 range for Tijuana?
No. It's the national range from the Serenattia Index 2026 for a serenade of about seven songs. Tijuana has no published local figure and we don't estimate one.

How many songs does a serenade have?
About seven is standard. You can add more, but they are charged separately, normally between MX$225 and MX$262 each nationally.

What time is best for the serenade?
Between ten and twelve at night is the tradition. After midnight many groups apply a surcharge, and in Tijuana you have to consider the return time if someone is crossing the border gate.

Does the trio work for a wedding?
Yes, for the welcome cocktail and the reception of guests. It doesn't work for the dance floor: there you need a DJ, a versatile group or a banda.

Trio or mariachi for a serenade?
The trio is intimate, fits in a hallway and costs less. The mariachi is presence and volume, costs MX$2,000 to MX$4,500 per hour nationally and can be heard across the whole block. It depends on the effect you want.
