To hire a serenade over WhatsApp or any chat, have five details ready: date, time, address with landmarks, occasion and songs. Ask in writing for the rate, what it includes and the confirmation. Avoid loose deposits: booking with escrow payment protects you if the musician does not show up.

Why do so many people hire serenades by chat?

Because it is fast and familiar. Many musicians post a number on their social media and the client writes, asks, negotiates and agrees in a few messages. For a casual dinner, that convenience is valuable. The problem appears when the agreement is only verbal or by message and the payment is made in advance, with no backup of any kind.

A deposit transferred to a personal account works perfectly when everything goes well. But if the musician cancels, arrives late or does not respond, you have nowhere to file a claim. That is why it pays to know what to ask and how to protect your money before paying.

The five details you should have ready

  1. Exact date and time. Do not say "at night": define a time and a tolerance.
  2. Address with landmarks. Street, number, color of the door, a nearby point.
  3. Occasion. A birthday is not the same as an apology or an anniversary.
  4. The person's name. So the group greets them correctly.
  5. Two or three favorite songs. That way the repertoire is personalized.

With that information, any musician can quote precisely and you avoid the back and forth of messages.

What you should ask for in writing before paying

What is not written down does not exist. Before sending money, make sure you have in the chat or in the booking:

  • The total rate and what it includes.
  • The length or the number of songs.
  • The format and the number of musicians.
  • The date, time and address confirmed.
  • The policy if you have to reschedule.

If the musician answers evasively or avoids putting something in writing, it is a warning sign.

Common risks of paying by loose transfer

Deposit with no backup

If you pay the deposit and the musician does not show up, your only recourse is to keep insisting by message. There is no third party holding the money or confirming availability.

Confusion about what is included

Many disagreements arise because the two parties understood different things. A written agreement in a booking avoids that problem.

No invoice

If you need an invoice for a company or an event, an informal agreement often does not include one.

A safer alternative: book with escrow

On Serenattia the process is similar to sending flowers: you go to the list of musicians, compare prices (they are visible and there is no exclusivity), choose date, time and place, and book. The payment works like this: you pay 100% when booking and the money is held in escrow. It is released to the musician at the event, when you scan their QR code before they play. If they do not show up, the payment is not released.

The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking. In addition to the rate, a 10% service fee is paid with a minimum of MX$200, and the musician receives 100% of their rate. If you need an invoice, one can be issued and the 16% VAT goes on top.

For a price reference, these are the lowest published today by musicians (MXN, before the fee): CDMX from MX$1,500, Puebla from MX$1,300, Merida from MX$1,700, Cancun from MX$1,800, Playa del Carmen from MX$2,000, Toluca from MX$2,200, Queretaro from MX$2,400, Monterrey from MX$2,500, Cuernavaca from MX$3,600 and Guadalajara from MX$4,000. Check the price index to compare.

How to read the signs of a good musician by message

A serious musician answers clearly: they say how much it costs, what it includes, what format they bring and what they need from the venue. They do not pressure you to pay right away or change the price every time you write. They accept that you ask for the details in writing and are not bothered if you ask how the booking is confirmed. If any of that fails, it is better to keep looking before sending money.

How far ahead to write

The more notice, the better. On the busiest days, like May 10 or February 14, groups fill up fast, and a last-minute message almost always gets the same answer: there is no room left. If your date is special, write several days ahead and have a second option ready.

What to do if you already paid a deposit

Save all the screenshots of the conversation and of the receipt, confirm the date in writing a day before and ask for the contact number for the day of the event. If something gets complicated, you will have clear evidence of what was agreed. For future occasions, consider booking on a platform where the payment is held in escrow from the start, so you do not depend only on one party's word.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to hire a musician just by message?

It can go well, but if you pay a loose deposit you have no backup. Booking with escrow payment avoids that risk, because the money is released only when the musician arrives.

What happens if I want to change the date?

Talk to the team as soon as possible. The availability of each booking is confirmed by the Serenattia team, so they can guide you depending on the case.

How do I know how much I will pay in total?

You will see the musician's rate plus the 10% service fee (minimum MX$200). If you ask for an invoice, the 16% VAT goes on top.

Which songs can I request?

You can usually propose whichever you like. Share them when booking and confirm with the musician that they play them.

When is the payment released to the musician?

At the event, when you scan the musician's QR code before they play. If they do not show up, it is not released.
