A friendship serenata (serenade) is a live musicians' performance that you dedicate to a friend to thank, celebrate or cheer them. Choose songs that have history between you, a genre they like and a simple moment. It does not need to be romantic: it is enough that it is sincere and personal.

Serenades have a reputation for being only for couples, but friendship also deserves music. A friend who helped you move, a friend who was there for your worst week or that lifelong companion can receive the same affection. And almost no one expects it, so the effect is huge.

When Does It Make Sense to Do a Friendship Serenade?

These are the most common occasions:

  • Birthday: instead of another gift that ends up in a drawer.
  • Gratitude: after someone supported you through a hard time.
  • Change of stage: graduation, new job, moving or farewell.
  • Getting through a rough patch: a song to cheer up someone who needs it.
  • Friendship anniversary: when many years of knowing each other are completed.
  • No reason: the best reason for a sincere gesture.

Which Songs Should You Choose for a Friendship Serenade?

Think of songs that talk about companionship, memories or gratitude, and avoid very romantic ones so it is not misread. A good formula is to choose:

  1. A song from when you met or from the time you spent the most time together.
  2. A song of gratitude or loyalty.
  3. A cheerful song for everyone to sing together at the end.

Each musician has his or her own repertoire, so before booking confirm that he or she can play what you want. If you are looking for ideas, ask the musician to suggest three or four options.

Which Musical Genre Works for Friends?

GenreHow it feelsWorks if...
MariachiFestive and emotionalYour friend is the type who sings at any gathering
NorteñoClose and cheerfulYou are the type to hang out with music and carne asada
BandaPowerful and danceableYou want a party with many people
TrioCalm and warmIt is a more intimate moment, with two or three people
Saxophone or violinElegant and differentYour friend appreciates the original

How Do I Organize It Among Several Friends?

A friendship serenade is perfect to do among several people. That way the cost is shared and the surprise is bigger. A simple plan:

  1. Create a message group only with those who will take part, leaving out the person being celebrated.
  2. Set the date, time and place, and choose one person to book and coordinate.
  3. Split the total cost of the serenade, including the service fee.
  4. Assign one person to record the moment and another to receive the musicians.
  5. Prepare a few words to say before or after the music.

The Serenattia team confirms the availability of every booking, so you can lock in the date with peace of mind.

How Much Does It Cost and How Do You Book?

The price is set by each musician and is visible. The lowest prices published today by musicians (October 2026) are: Mexico City from MX$1,500, Puebla from MX$1,300, Mérida from MX$1,700, Cancún from MX$1,800 and Monterrey from MX$2,500, before the service fee. The musician receives 100% of his or her rate and you pay separately a 10% fee, with a minimum of MX$200. If there are five friends and the total is around MX$1,700, it would come to about MX$340 each. See more prices in the music price index for Mexico.

Book from the list of musicians. You pay 100% when booking and the money is held in escrow. It is released to the musician at the event, when you scan his or her QR code before he or she plays. If you need an invoice, it can be issued with the 16% IVA on top.

What to Say at a Friendship Serenade

Among friends, words are usually the hardest part: we are not used to saying "thanks for being there" without a joke in between. One way to solve it is to combine humor and sincerity. Start with an anecdote that only you two understand, something that gets a laugh, and end with a direct sentence: "Thanks for being there when it was needed most." That mix avoids the cheesiness and makes clear what you feel.

If several people are taking part, have each one say a line of under ten seconds. Three or four different voices put together a complete message without anyone feeling like they are giving a speech. If the person being celebrated is very reserved, it is enough for the group to sing and for someone to hand them a card signed by everyone to read afterward.

Ideas Depending on the Type of Friendship

  • The lifelong friend: songs from the school years or early youth, and a dedication that mentions how many years you have known each other.
  • The friend who was going through a bad time: few songs, a warm tone and a sentence that acknowledges her strength. No drama.
  • The coworker or college friend: a short, cheerful format, with a song for everyone to sing and a toast at the end.
  • The friend who is leaving the city: a farewell serenade with songs about coming back, and a promise to visit.

Before booking, think about whether the person enjoys attention. If not, choose a private place and a small group; if they love gatherings, a carne asada with mariachi or norteño can be perfect.
