For a young man, the best birthday gift is usually an experience or a gesture he identifies with: something from his hobby, a night out with friends or an original surprise. A serenata (serenade), with the music he listens to and his friends present, is an option almost nobody expects.
Between 18 and 30, many young men buy what they want when they want it, so surprising them with an object is hard. What does work is hitting their personality and giving something that tells a story. This guide gathers ideas for different profiles and a proposal that breaks the mold.
What do I give a young man according to his tastes?
- Gamer: an accessory, a subscription or a game night with friends.
- Athlete: gear, tickets to a game or a special class.
- Student or first job: something useful like a backpack, headphones or a wallet.
- Party lover: a big night out with friends or a special reservation.
- Cook or foodie: a short course or a dinner at a new place.
- Musician or music fan: concert tickets or a surprise serenade.
Is a serenade too old-fashioned for a young man?
Not at all. Today's serenade does not have to be only for lovers: it can be a mariachi at a carne asada (backyard barbecue), a norteño group with his friends or a banda at his party. What matters is that he recognizes the music and that the moment is fun. Many young men enjoy serenades precisely because they are different and become content worth remembering.
If the music he listens to is something else, talk to the musician: some groups play versions of modern songs, and others offer a more varied repertoire. Confirm the repertoire before booking.
Which genre to choose?
| If he is... | Genre |
|---|---|
| Into regional Mexican music | Norteño or banda |
| Into tradition and family | Mariachi |
| Into romantic music, with a girlfriend | Trio or violin |
| Into modern, different tastes | Saxophone |
How do you organize the surprise with his friends?
- Set up a chat without him and define date, time and place.
- Choose an organizer who books and receives the musicians.
- Split the cost among everyone so it is more affordable.
- Prepare an extra touch, like a cake or a drink to toast with.
- Record the moment: it is what gets shared the most afterward.
The Serenattia team confirms the availability of each booking, and you can book from the list of musicians.
How much does it cost and how is it paid?
The lowest prices published today by musicians (October 2026) are: Mexico City from MX$1,500, Puebla from MX$1,300, Mérida from MX$1,700, Cancún from MX$1,800 and Querétaro from MX$2,400, before the service fee. The musician receives 100% of their rate and you pay a 10% fee separately, with a minimum of MX$200. Among ten friends, a total of MX$1,700 would be about MX$170 per person. See the music price index for Mexico.
You pay 100% when you book and the money is held in escrow. It is released to the musician at the event, when you scan their QR code before they play. If you need an invoice, it can be issued with 16% VAT on top.
Gift ideas by stage of life
A 20-year-old does not want the same thing as a 28-year-old, and it is wise to adjust the idea to his moment in life:
- Ages 18 to 22: usually in college or in a first job, with little money and a lot of desire to hang out. What he enjoys most is a night out with friends, something for his room or his backpack, or a surprise with a party atmosphere.
- Ages 23 to 27: starting to become independent. Useful gifts for his home or work work well, an experience he would not buy himself or a meal with his people.
- Ages 28 to 30: already thinking about important changes. A gesture with a story, like an album with college friends or a dedicated song, reaches him more than a gadget.
To choose, look at his phone with permission or ask his friends: what music he listens to, where he goes and what he mentions he would like. Those three clues are more useful than any generic gift list.
How to do a serenade without it feeling awkward
At this age, what weighs most is that the moment not put him in an awkward situation. A few agreements help it be fun:
- Let it be with his people. A surprise among close friends or immediate family is lived with more confidence than one in front of strangers.
- Let it be brief. Three or four songs are enough; afterward, the hanging out carries on naturally.
- Let there be at least one song he sings. When he takes part, he stops feeling watched.
- No heavy jokes. Avoid anecdotes that embarrass him or expose his partner.
- Let it be possible to improvise. If the mood gets good, ask the musician to stretch it a little, always within what was agreed in the booking.
How to coordinate friends and the budget
A good practice is for one person to handle the booking and the others transfer their share. Before booking, define the spending cap and review the options in your city in the musicians directory. If the group is small, a more compact format, like a duo or a trio, may turn out better than a large one. And if you want to add a cake or a drink to toast with, split it separately so nobody overpays.
Finally, define who will bring him to the place and at what time, and who will record. With those three roles clear, the surprise does not depend on improvisation and everyone can enjoy it.
